Mixed Muses: The Morning After

He wakes up.  In a strange bed.

It takes a moment to remember where he is.  And who he's with.

As he gets his bearings, he smiles to himself and looks over at Alisa.

"Thanks." Maybe he wore it because he expected that reaction? "You did say you wanted to see me in something more casual."

"I did," she replies with a smile. And because she's feeling buoyed--the morning hasn't gone badly by any stretch--Alisa leans over quick;y and kisses his cheek.

It's not as intimate as it could have been, but she's working on it.

He pulls her closer for a hug. And then a kiss.

No words needed.

It gets a little laugh out of her, but Alisa winds her arms around Howard's waist.

"I really like it when you do that."

"Thanks.

"It is quite fun. We should consider doing it more." Without any strings attached, of course.

"Should we?" she asks.

"We could. I wouldn't mind."

"Here no one is going to care much. I've seen the future, and it's a lot more open." He hesitates to say "color blind." He doubts anyone truly is.

"Whose future?" she asks, curious.

"The ones that don't end in total annihilation, if that matters. Yours, certainly. At least from the way you talk about it." He hugs her a bit long.

"I think...mine could be very bright," she says, eventually, after turning against Howard and letting him hug her. His arms are warm and she likes it, letting her hands rest on his shoulders.

"It seems like we're all okay now that we're at Xavier's. Like maybe we'll be able to be kind of normal there."

"I guess that's good. But what happens when you're not there." A new form of segregation to replace the old?

"I'm usually not seen if I'm not at the school," she says. "Sometimes not even there. I suppose...that's why I don't have a problem with not being seen if I go with you."

She leans in and rests her head against his shoulder. "Do you think that's okay?"

He doesn't. And has to think about how to say that.

"I think a face like yours should be seen."

"Is that just because you like to look at it?" she asks, almost playful.

She doesn't mind accepting different treatment, for a short while, because of what she looks like, and to spare her companion the funny looks he'd undoubtedly get. Howard is very smart, and very handsome, and those two things in conjunction can take a man very far in business, she's well aware. She'd like to see that have happened when she gets back to her own time.

"Well, yes. But also because you shouldn't hide your light in a bushel. You should be proud of who you are. And not just of being able to be a spy." He has no idea that someday, ideas like pride will take on much wider meanings.

She smiles at his reasoning, and tilts her head up. "I'm not ashamed or afraid of who I am," she says. "But proud is still a work in progress."

"OK, that's fair." Pause. "I hope I don't sound like one of your teachers when I talk this way." It might not be good to be reminded of the age difference.

"No, you don't. You're much more interesting than they are." She rocks up onto her toes and kisses him, smiling comfortably.

He returns the kiss, under the sunny November sky.
